The annual Baraga Days were held Sept. 8-9, in Sault Ste. Marie, hosted by the Bishop Baraga Association, and Holy Name of Mary parish. Bishop John Doerfler was the principal celebrant for the Baraga Days Mass held on Sept. 9. Parts of the Mass were said in the Slovenian and Ojibwe languages.
Fr. Joze Pibernik from Trebnje, Slovenia, and Bishop Andrej Saje, bishop of the Diocese of Novo Mesto, Slovenia, accepted the 2023 Baraga Person of the Year Award from Deacon John Vidmar of St. Mary’s Slovenia Catholic Mission in Lemont, Ill. and an advisory board member for the Bishop Baraga Association. Bishop Saje and Fr. Pibernik traveled from Bishop Baraga’s home diocese in Slovenia to attend Baraga Days in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., on Sept. 8-9. Fr. Corey Litzner (not pictured) from Sacred Heart Church in L’Anse also received the award.
